In a significant stride towards enhancing infrastructure in Nigeria, the Federal Government has allocated N280 billion for the completion of the Bodo-Bonny Road project in Rivers State. This ambitious initiative aims to connect the historically isolated Bonny Island to the mainland, thereby boosting economic activities and improving connectivity for residents.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Works, Engr David Umahi, during a recent inspection visit to the project site. Emphasizing the urgency of the project, Umahi stressed the need for the contractor, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, to expedite efforts to meet the project deadline of December 2024.
"I have reservations about the project administration by the contractor," stated Umahi, highlighting the necessity for transparency and accountability in project execution. He emphasized that funds disbursed must directly correlate with tangible project milestones.
Umahi's remarks were detailed in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Uchenna Orji, underscoring the government's firm stance on project delivery timelines and budget adherence. "No further excuses will be tolerated," warned Umahi, asserting that additional funds beyond the allocated N280 billion would not be approved.
Acknowledging the prolonged delay in completing the Bodo-Bonny Road, Umahi expressed optimism that the current efforts, bolstered by President Bola Tinubu's support and contributions from stakeholders like the NLNG and the Bodo-Bonny Peace Committee, would ensure timely completion.
However, the Minister's scrutiny extended beyond the Bodo-Bonny project. He expressed dismay over the slow progress of the 15km East-West Road section from Port Harcourt Eleme Junction to Onne Port Junction, managed by RCC. Despite over N40 billion already disbursed, minimal construction progress has been achieved, prompting Umahi to consider alternative measures to alleviate the plight of road users.
"We cannot continue to tolerate the suffering of our people," declared Umahi, highlighting the government's commitment to interim maintenance measures until RCC resumes active construction.
