Civil servants under the federal government payroll are set to start receiving their new minimum wage payments from Thursday, September 26th. This update was confirmed by the Spokesperson of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Bawa Mokwa, during an exclusive interview on Thursday.Mokwa assured federal workers that payment alerts reflecting the revised minimum wage would begin to arrive from Thursday. His statement follows a recent announcement by the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta, who on Tuesday confirmed that the government had approved an upward review of the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) in line with the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act, 2024.However, while civil servants can expect to see the new minimum wage reflected in their salaries, Mokwa did not clarify whether the payments would include arrears. In response to inquiries on the matter, he stated, "Federal Government civil servants will start getting the new minimum wage from today, this September 2024. What I can tell you is that the minimum wage salary payment is today, but I am not sure about the arrears."This development comes after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 on July 18, 2024. Following the president’s approval, the Senate swiftly passed the new minimum wage bill into law, paving the way for its implementation across the country.
