It is impossible to know my father, Elder Peter Babatunde Akande, without recognizing two key pillars that have shaped his life ,his unwavering faith and the currency of his integrity. These virtues have not only defined his character but have profoundly impacted the lives of all who know him. As Baba PB turns 94, it is fitting to reflect on the legacy of faith and integrity that he has instilled in his children, his community, and all those around him.
Growing up in Baba PB's home meant starting each day in prayer—no exceptions. The 5:30 am prayer bell was non-negotiable. With eight children and a few other relatives under his roof, the morning devotion always brought together at least 12 people. The session was more than a routine; it was a spiritual and mental enrichment that shaped my journey into adulthood. Hymns, scripture readings from the Psalms, and kneeling in prayer were essential parts of our lives, creating a solid foundation of faith. My father's prayers were long, often filled with gratitude for even the smallest blessings he taught us the power of thanksgiving and the importance of a devoted life to Christ, not just by words but by example.
Faith was not just something my father practiced; it was something he lived. His deep belief in Jesus Christ shaped his decisions and actions. But he was not only a man of faith; he was also a strict disciplinarian, holding us accountable while showering us with love and care. One vivid memory from 1981 stands out when my father paid $25,000 to send one of my elder brothers to university in the United States, back when the Naira was stronger than the dollar. This was a significant sacrifice for our family so much so that he forewent buying the Mercedes Benz, which many of his peers flaunted as a status symbol, opting instead to stick with his trusted Peugeot 505. Yet, years later, my brother sent him that Mercedes from abroad, a testament to the rewards of his selflessness and integrity.
Education was something my father valued immensely. He supported all of us, ensuring we pursued as much education as we desired and had the capacity for. His joy was palpable when I was finally admitted to the University of Ibadan in 1986 after multiple JAMB attempts. His pride in our academic and professional achievements was matched only by his determination to help us reach our potential.
In his professional life, Baba PB was a business executive who worked for major firms like Odutola Tyresoles and Michelin, where he rose to the position of National Marketing Manager. His career trajectory placed him in line to become Michelin’s first Nigerian CEO. However, his integrity led him to resign and start his own business in Ibadan, choosing personal values over corporate ambition. His leadership extended beyond the business world; in his community, he was a respected church leader, serving as Patron of the Choir and Boys Brigade at the C.A.C Itabale Olugbode and Oke Alafia parishes in Ibadan. For decades, he served as Treasurer of the C.A.C Olugbode, a role he held well into his 90s because of his prudence and honesty.
But faith, like life, is often tested. Baba PB has faced his share of trials, yet his faith in God has never wavered. He lost my mother, his beloved wife, in 2003, just before her 70th birthday. He also endured the heartache of losing two daughters, one in 2014 and another just a few months ago in 2024. I have witnessed his sorrow, but I have also seen his steadfast belief that God is faithful, even in the darkest times. His resilience is a testament to the strength of his faith.
When I was appointed as the spokesperson for then Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in 2015, my father, though still grieving the loss of one of his daughters, was overcome with gratitude. His words were filled with emotion I didn’t know I would still receive good news like this ever again! His faith, coupled with his belief in God’s promises, gave him hope even in moments of great pain.
One of the most trying periods for our family came in 1997 when my brother-in-law, Major Seun Fadipe, was caught up in a political crisis under General Sani Abacha’s regime. As Chief Security Officer to General Oladipo Diya, Major Fadipe was accused, alongside others, of plotting a coup. It was a tense time for our family, but my father, as always, turned to fasting and prayer. Through relentless prayers, my father leaned on his faith, and by God's grace, the worst was averted. Major Fadipe's life was spared after Abacha’s sudden death. This period reinforced my father's deep belief in the power of prayer a belief that has been a cornerstone of his life.
As Baba PB turns 94, we, his children, are reminded of the incredible man who has shaped our lives. He has been a father, a mentor, and a hero, leading by example with unwavering faith and integrity. In the words of my sister, Evangelist Mofoluwaso Akande Ogunbiyi,My Daddy is my Hero! GOD bless you, Dad. I love you, and you know it! You have shown all of us the light, and you have been the best dad anyone could ask for! May GOD bless your new age. Happy 94th Birthday.
Happy Birthday, Baba PB. Your legacy of faith and integrity will continue to inspire generations to come.
