Former lawmaker Honourable Saheed Akinade Fijabi, who represented Ibadan Northwest/Southwest Federal Constituency, made a significant contribution to healthcare by donating essential medical equipment to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. The donation, which took place on Friday, included a Portable Phlegm Suction Unit, an electric kettle, and an incubator. This gesture, aimed at improving healthcare delivery at the renowned hospital, was part of Fijabi’s birthday celebration and his ongoing efforts to give back to the community.
Fijabi emphasized that his motivation for the donation was rooted in his belief in community service, stating, What we are doing here today is just to give back to the community. I believe in giving back. This is not politics, though I’m a politician; this is about helping the people. He also highlighted the importance of supporting healthcare institutions, acknowledging that the government alone cannot meet all societal needs.
In addition to his donation to UCH, Fijabi also provided drugs to the Kilanko Fijabi Primary Healthcare Centre, Oritamerin, Ibadan, further demonstrating his commitment to improving healthcare services in his community.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UCH, Professor Jesse Otegbayo, praised Fijabi for his generosity and leadership. He noted that the donated equipment would significantly aid the hospital, particularly in the care of premature babies. We have the human capital and capacity to do a lot in the health space, but many of our activities are hampered by a lack of equipment. Honourable Fijabi’s donation will go a long way in helping us take appropriate care of our patients, especially premature babies, Otegbayo said.
Professor Otegbayo also called on other well-meaning Nigerians to follow Fijabi’s example by contributing to the healthcare sector, which often faces challenges due to insufficient resources. He added, If more people emulated Fijabi’s gesture, our healthcare system would be better equipped to handle its responsibilities.
The Deputy Director of Nursing at UCH, Bello Oyeronke, echoed this sentiment, assuring that the equipment would be used effectively to promote neonatal health and reduce infant mortality. She described Fijabi as a passionate politician who cares deeply about the well being of children and urged him to continue making a positive impact on the community.
Fijabi’s donation not only highlights the importance of supporting healthcare institutions but also serves as a reminder of the vital role individuals can play in improving the well-being of their communities. His contributions to UCH and other healthcare centers reflect his dedication to service beyond politics, aiming to make a lasting difference in the lives of others.
