Yahaya Bello, the embattled ex-governor of Kogi State, has set a condition for appearing before the EFCC for prosecution.
According to reports, Yahaya Bello has agreed to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja on June 13 to address corruption allegations, but under certain conditions.
Yahaya Bello's chief legal representative, Abdulwahab Mohammed, informed Justice Emeka Nwite about this stance following the court's dismissal of a plea to halt the trial.
Mohammed clarified that the former Governor's only requirement was a guarantee of safety from harm.
Mohammed clarified that Bello's absence was not an attempt to evade arraignment but rather stemmed from concerns about his safety while in the custody of the EFCC in Abuja. He pointed to ongoing threats to Bello's life as the rationale for his temporary nonattendance.
Justice Nwite emphasized that the EFCC operates within legal bounds and urged Bello to adhere to the judicial process. He reiterated the principle that accusations must be substantiated, and every individual accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
In response to the court's position, Mohammed expressed gratitude to the judge and affirmed that Bello would cooperate, contingent upon assurances regarding his safety. He asked for a four-week period to ensure Bello's presence.
With no opposition from the EFCC's counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, Justice Nwite scheduled Bello's arraignment for June 13.
