A Lagos High Court has heard startling testimony from dispatch rider Monday Osazuwa, who claimed that former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele instructed him not to maintain any records of money he allegedly collected on Emefiele’s behalf.
This revelation came during the ongoing trial of Emefiele, who is facing serious charges of abuse of office and money laundering involving a staggering $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion.
Osazuwa, the first prosecution witness, was recalled to the stand on Monday after a request by the court, presided over by Justice Rahman Oshodi. He detailed his interactions with Emefiele, stating that the former governor had directly advised him against documenting any financial transactions.
Osazuwa acknowledged that he had no written records from either Emefiele or his co-accused, Henry Omoile, regarding the money exchanged.
Furthermore, Osazuwa conceded that there were no witnesses present when he delivered the funds to Emefiele, raising questions about the legitimacy of the transactions.
The testimony was complemented by earlier statements from other prosecution witnesses, including Ifeoma Ogbonnaya, a relationship manager with Zenith Bank, who confirmed that there were no documents linking Emefiele to specific transactions involving his wife or Omoile.
The trial continues as the prosecution seeks to establish a clear connection between Emefiele and the alleged financial misconduct.
Justice Oshodi has adjourned the case until Wednesday, October 30, for further proceedings.
