Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently emphasized that it is unfair to deny the Igbo people the presidency due to past secession attempts. Speaking at a meeting with the League of Northern Democrats, led by former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, Obasanjo stressed that all three major ethnic groups in Nigeria—Hausa/Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo—had, at some point, considered breaking away from the country. He referenced the North's own secessionist attempt through the Araba movement.
Obasanjo urged Nigerians to rethink divisive notions and work towards unity, stating that no ethnic group is superior and that everyone has had historical reasons for dissatisfaction. His call for collaboration was framed as essential for building a better Nigeria.
