Nigerian music producer and artist Samuel Oguachuba, popularly known as Samklef, has voiced his opinion on why singer Davido faces significant disrespect within the industry.
According to Samklef, Davido’s approach to helping others in the music scene, described as being "based on expectations," is a factor contributing to this issue.
This discussion erupted after Nigerian YouTuber Korty EO expressed disappointment on social media, accusing Davido’s team of retracting their agreement to allow her to re-edit and repost an old interview with the singer.
Supporting her sentiments, skit maker Nasty Blaq also condemned the perceived disrespect toward Davido, saying the artist genuinely wants to help others but often faces backlash instead.
However, Samklef offered a different perspective, drawing comparisons to rapper Olamide.
He pointed out that while Olamide has helped numerous artists in the industry, he rarely faces the same level of disrespect.
Samklef attributed this to Davido's inclination to maintain a positive image with everyone, suggesting that this approach ultimately backfires.
“Davido brought it to himself,” Samklef tweeted. “This is what happens when you are always trying to look good in the eyes of everybody! You dey help based on expectations! Based on control,” he added, advising Davido to stop playing the victim.
In another comment, Samklef responded to a fan who noted that he hadn’t mentioned Wizkid as one of those who helps artists.
Samklef replied that Wizkid assists people without seeking recognition, suggesting that Davido’s approach is comparatively louder but less effective.
He even noted that none of Davido’s signees have reached the level of Tems, a prominent figure associated with Wizkid’s team.
Samklef’s remarks come in light of a previous public dispute with Davido. In October 2023, Davido accused Samklef of leaking photos of his wife, Chioma, and their twins—a claim Samklef denied.
The incident escalated, with Samklef criticizing Davido’s behavior and even likening the superstar to controversial figures in the industry.
However, Samklef has recently shown a more reconciliatory tone, urging Davido to apologize to those he may have wronged and offering advice on how to mend industry relationships.
Samklef’s comments underscore ongoing discussions around expectations, public perception, and industry relationships, highlighting the challenges that come with fame and accessibility in Nigeria’s music scene.
