A magistrate court in Kuje, Abuja, has granted a N500,000 bail to Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, following his arraignment on charges related to an alleged assault on a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.
The charges, filed by the Office of the Inspector-General of Police, include assault and threats to life.
Ikwechegh, who was arraigned on Wednesday, entered a plea of not guilty to the accusations.
The case stems from an incident that reportedly took place on October 27, which has since sparked widespread attention after a viral video showed Ikwechegh allegedly in a physical altercation with Abuwatseya.
Public outcry over the incident has led the Inspector General of Police’s Special Investigation Unit to take on the case, with calls for accountability from both citizens and advocacy groups.
The court proceedings have attracted significant public interest, as Nigerians closely monitor the case, hoping for a precedent-setting decision that may signal increased accountability for public officials facing allegations of misconduct.
