In a significant announcement during the 2024 Public Service Week celebrations, Elder Effiong Essien, the Head of Service of Akwa Ibom State, reaffirmed the state government's commitment to implementing the new minimum wage recently agreed upon between the Federal Government and the Nigerian Labour Congress. This declaration underscores Akwa Ibom's proactive stance towards ensuring fair wages for its workforce.
Addressing journalists at a press briefing held to mark the occasion under the theme "Stay Forward Looking…Make a Difference," Essien highlighted the state's history of prioritizing workers' welfare. He recalled how Akwa Ibom was among the first states to implement the previous minimum wage increase in 2019, surpassing the agreed national benchmark.
Reflecting on the significance of the Public Service Week, which hadn't been observed in Akwa Ibom for a decade until this year, Essien expressed gratitude to Governor Umo Eno for reinstating this important celebration. He emphasized that the Public Service Week, globally recognized on June 23 as the United Nations Public Service Day, serves as a vital tribute to the dedicated individuals in the public sector who contribute tirelessly to societal development.
"The decision to observe the 2024 Public Service Week is a testament to Governor Umo Eno's commitment to fostering a conducive work environment that enhances productivity among the Akwa Ibom workforce," Essien remarked. He praised the governor's efforts in motivating public servants and ensuring they are appreciated for their pivotal role in governance and service delivery.
As the state eagerly awaits the formal announcement of the new minimum wage, Essien assured that once details are finalized, Akwa Ibom State will promptly disclose its implementation plan. This proactive approach not only demonstrates the state's respect for labor rights but also its dedication to maintaining equitable standards in wage policies.
