A 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, has been sentenced to 11 years imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Lagos for importing 74 parcels of Canadian Loud, a potent form of synthetic cannabis, into Nigeria.
The illegal substance, weighing 35.20 kilograms, was discovered during her arrest by officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday, October 3, 2024.
Munju was apprehended during the inward clearance of passengers arriving at the airport.
Following her conviction, the judge handed down the 11-year prison sentence but also gave her the option of paying a N100 million fine—N50 million for each of the two charges brought against her.
The NDLEA continues to strengthen its efforts in curbing drug trafficking and abuse in Nigeria, with the sentencing of Munju highlighting the agency's commitment to prosecuting offenders involved in the illicit drug trade.
