Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the former chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), has passed away at the age of 83 in a hospital in Virginia, USA. Nwosu is best remembered for overseeing Nigeria's June 12, 1993, presidential election, which has been widely regarded as the country’s freest and fairest. This historic election saw Chief Moshood Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) declared the winner over Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC), but the results were controversially annulled by the military regime of Ibrahim Babangida. Despite being ordered to stop, Nwosu courageously released many of the election results, making his role in Nigeria’s electoral history particularly significant.
