It seems the local government elections in Rivers State have taken a violent turn, particularly in the Rumuepirikom community, where heavy gunfire has been reported. The area, which is the hometown of Nyesom Wike, former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has witnessed clashes, with political thugs allegedly launching an attack as electoral officers arrived in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. Wike’s strained relationship with the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara, adds to the tension surrounding these elections. Unfortunately, at least one person has been injured and taken to the hospital following the violence.
This incident highlights the persistent challenges of electoral violence and insecurity during elections in parts of Nigeria.
