On September 3, 2024, Bauchi State’s Commissioner of Health, Dr. Adamu Umar Sambo, addressed a pivotal event centered on the introduction and scaling-up of Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS) in the state. The inception meeting marked a significant step forward in enhancing maternal health through improved nutrition during pregnancy.
Dr. Sambo emphasized the critical role of MMS in boosting maternal health and achieving favorable pregnancy outcomes. In his speech, he underscored the collective responsibility of ensuring that every expectant mother has access to these vital supplements and comprehensive healthcare services. He also highlighted the recent delivery of 134,280 bottles of MMS to Bauchi State through the Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Board, a move that aims to scale up the availability of these essential nutrients.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the state's commitment to improving maternal and child health outcomes, aligning with the Banki Plan 2.0. He acknowledged the progress made, including increased funding for health programs, better drug supplies, recruitment of skilled health personnel, and full supply of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF). However, he also noted that significant work remains to be done, as preventable maternal deaths continue to be a challenge.
Dr. Sambo praised the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, Alive & Thrive, FHI360, and other partners like Advancing Nutrition Nigeria, Breakthrough Action Nigeria, and Nutrition International. Their support has been instrumental in advancing health systems in Bauchi State.
In addition to Dr. Sambo’s remarks, Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed, Executive Chairman of the State Primary Healthcare Development Board, spoke about the importance of MMS in complementing iron and folic acid supplements. He assured that MMS will be distributed across all health facilities in the state and that health workers have been trained to effectively administer the supplements.
Dr. Sambo concluded with a call to action for leaders and stakeholders to prioritize maternal and child health, invest in healthcare infrastructure, and work together to ensure that no mother, newborn, or child is left behind. His message was clear: with united efforts, Bauchi State can build a healthier and brighter future for all its residents.
