The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a dire warning, revealing that many Nigerian universities are nearing collapse due to the crippling cost of electricity. During the opening session of a two-day national conference in Abuja, ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, highlighted the financial strain faced by institutions, with electricity bills for some universities ranging between N200 million to N300 million monthly.Despite these enormous expenses, Nigerian universities receive only N15 million monthly from the federal government to cover running costs, which includes electricity and other essential expenditures. Prof. Osodeke expressed frustration over the imbalance, pointing out that while universities struggle with such meager funding, senators receive N21 million each month. He stated, "What the government gives to run the system is N15 million, and you get a bill for electricity alone of N300 million. Where is that money coming from? You have to run laboratories, purchase diesel, and fuel for vehicles."
