The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a fresh 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, urging it to resolve outstanding issues that have strained relations between the union and the government. ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, announced this development in a statement released on Wednesday.According to Osodeke, ASUU's frustrations stem from what they perceive as the government’s lack of commitment and continuous delay tactics in addressing critical concerns. As a result, the union has given the administration of President Bola Tinubu until Monday, September 23, to resolve the pending issues or risk further actions. The statement read:"In view of the foregoing, ASUU resolves to give the Nigerian Government another 14 days, in addition to the earlier 21 days, beginning from Monday, September 23, 2024, during which all the lingering issues must have been concretely addressed to the satisfaction of the membership of the union."The ASUU President further warned that the union should not be blamed for any potential industrial action that may arise due to the government's failure to address the situation within the specified timeframe.ASUU’s ultimatum has reignited concerns over the possible resurgence of strikes in Nigerian universities, which could once again disrupt academic activities nationwide if a resolution is not reached. The union’s ongoing negotiations with the Federal Government revolve around issues such as university funding, salaries, and working conditions for academic staff, among others.
