The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Anambra State Chapter, has commenced the celebration of the 2024 Pharmacy Week with an energetic health walk, Solution Health Walk for Life, held in Awka over the weekend. This event marks the beginning of the society's maiden Pharmacy Week, themed Pharmacists: Meeting Global Needs, aimed at raising awareness about the vital role pharmacists play in public health.
The health walk began at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, where participants engaged in invigorating aerobics before proceeding on a roadshow through the heart of Awka. The route covered major parts of the city, including Aroma Junction, Enugu Onitsha Expressway, Unizik Junction, and Y Junction, before concluding back at Ekwueme Square. This event brought together pharmacists, health professionals, and the public to promote the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and the critical role of pharmacists in the community.
Pharmacist Emeka Okpana, Chairman of PSN Anambra Chapter, emphasized the need for pharmacists to maintain a healthy and supportive relationship with the public to combat issues like self medication, drug abuse, and the administration of counterfeit drugs by non professionals. He highlighted the significance of pharmacists in the healthcare system, underscoring their expertise in ensuring the safe use of medications.
Pharmacist Chisom Uchem, Executive Secretary and CEO of Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, echoed these sentiments. A former Chairman of the association, Uchem emphasized the importance of public health education and the need to curb the misuse of medications through professional guidance.
The Pharmacy Week celebration will culminate on October 26, 2024, with the 31st Annual Scientific Conference. This event will bring together pharmacists and healthcare professionals to discuss advancements in the field and explore ways to meet global health needs.
Pharmacist Alexander Ndupuechi, Vice Chairman of PSN Anambra Chapter and Chairman of the Pharmacy Week Committee, expressed optimism about the positive impact the week’s activities will have on public health awareness. He noted that the events provide a platform to educate the public on the importance of seeking professional advice for medical treatments and to promote healthier living practices.
The launch of the Pharmacy Week in Anambra through the Solution Health Walk for Life sets the tone for a week of education, awareness, and community engagement. As pharmacists continue to play a crucial role in ensuring the health and safety of the public, the PSN Anambra Chapter is committed to fostering stronger connections between pharmacists and the communities they serve.
