The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has raised concerns over the potential seizure of Nigerian assets by China, following a controversial deal between the Enugu State Government and Chinese companies. HURIWA alleges that the administration of Governor Peter Mbah signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that could jeopardize ownership of ancestral lands in Ugwuaji Awkunanaw, which are currently under litigation.
HURIWA warns that this deal may open the door to Chinese companies seizing Nigerian assets abroad, including embassy buildings in Beijing, if the legal rulings favor the landowners. They draw a parallel to a similar situation in Ogun State, where a transaction with a Chinese company led to the seizure of Nigerian assets, including three presidential aircraft.
The rights group argues that Governor Mbah's actions could lead to future arbitration and possible international repercussions if not addressed properly.
