Akwa Ibom governor, Umo Eno has relieved the Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr Bassey Okon, of his appointment with immediate effect.
This was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday, June 10, 2024, by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Enobong Uwah, in Uyo.
The statement, which did not give reasons for the resignation of the commissioner appointment, directed Okon to hand over all government property in his position to the Permanent Secretary in the ministry.
It added that the secretary to the state government is to oversee the affairs of the ministry pending the appointment of a new commissioner.
The statement, however, thanked the commissioner for the time he has served the state in the executive council.
“In an ongoing effort to reposition this administration in line with the ARISE Agenda, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Umo Eno, has relieved Dr. Bassey Okon, Commissioner for Special Duties, as Commissioner in the Akwa Ibom Executive Council with immediate effect,” the message read in part.
The statement wishes the outgoing commissioner the best in his future endeavours.
Dr Okon becomes the first Commissioner to be sacked by Governor Eno.
It was speculated ahead of Eno’s administration’s one year in office that the governor has been under pressure to reshuffle his cabinet made up of majority appointees he inherited from his predecessor, Udom Emmanuel’s administration.
