As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Anniversary, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has urged residents to remain hopeful and united amidst the country's current economic challenges. During his Independence Day address, broadcasted through the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), Governor Makinde reassured citizens that his administration is committed to making decisions in the best interest of the people.
One significant highlight of the governor's speech was the announcement of a revision in the guarantor system for agricultural credit loans. In a move aimed at supporting small-scale farmers, Governor Makinde revealed that the state’s Agricultural Credit Corporation will no longer require only civil servants to serve as guarantors. Farmers seeking loans can now be guaranteed by community development associations (CDAs), farmers’ associations, and artisans’ associations. This change is expected to provide greater access to credit for small agripreneurs across the state, helping them sustain and expand their operations.
Additionally, the governor declared a six month extension for the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER) Transport Scheme, which has provided significant relief to residents through subsidised transportation. The state’s Omituntun buses, operating both within and between cities, have seen their fares slashed by more than half under the SAfER initiative. This extension is expected to further ease the economic strain on citizens.
Moreover, Governor Makinde has expanded the scope of the subsidy to include trucks used for the transportation of crops across the state. This step is aimed at reducing the cost of moving agricultural products, which will ultimately benefit both farmers and consumers.
In his address, Governor Makinde emphasized the need for unity, urging residents to focus on what binds them together rather than on what divides them. He encouraged Oyo residents to remember their shared identity, culture, and history, while working towards building a stronger state and nation. The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring the security of the state.
As part of the Independence Day celebrations, the governor reassured citizens of their safety, noting that increased security presence during the festivities is to guarantee a peaceful and secure environment.
Governor Makinde called on the people to look beyond the present challenges and reflect on ways to create a better future for the nation. He concluded his message by emphasizing the importance of hope and resilience, reminding the people that together, they can overcome the economic hurdles facing the country.
As Oyo State continues to implement these strategic policies, Governor Makinde’s leadership shows a commitment to alleviating the economic burdens of the people, fostering development, and promoting unity.
