In the midst of swirling rumors about a potential presidential run in 2027, Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has firmly laid those speculations to rest. The governor, known for his decisive leadership and independent political approach, emphasized that any decisions regarding his political future would be made on his own terms and when he deems the time right.
Speaking at an event at Fashola Farm in Oyo State, Gov. Makinde addressed the mounting rumors suggesting that he might challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next presidential election. He described these speculations as baseless and unnecessary, asserting that he has always made his own political decisions without external influence.
We didn’t host the PDP reporters’ retreat because someone has a presidential ambition, Makinde clarified. No comment, nothing. But all I can say to you is, I’m old enough. If I want to do something, I will come out and say, this is what I want to do. So, no speculation, nobody can push my agenda. I will push my agenda when the time comes.
Makinde's political journey has been marked by resilience and determination. He recalled his previous setbacks, including two failed Senate bids, before successfully securing the governorship of Oyo State. According to the governor, his election was driven by the will of the people, and not by any political godfathers or major sponsors.
Oyo State people took a decision in 2019. We did not have a godfather. Nobody sponsored me, nobody gave me a dime, but the people of Oyo State decided to give this opportunity to an outsider, Makinde recounted.
Reflecting on his background, the governor highlighted that he had no prior political experience before running for governor. Despite the naysayers who doubted his capabilities, he presented his Road Map to Accelerated Development of Oyo State, 2019 to 2023, which won the people’s confidence and led to his eventual victory.
Gov. Makinde also expressed concerns about Nigeria’s political future, specifically the potential danger of evolving into a one-party state. He stressed the importance of maintaining a multi party system, which he believes is crucial for fostering diverse leadership opportunities and giving individuals from different backgrounds a chance to showcase their abilities.
Nigeria must not slide into a one party state so that others will have the opportunity to showcase their talents, he said.
The governor remains focused on his current duties and responsibilities in Oyo State, he made it clear that any future political ambitions will be revealed in due time. His message to the public is clear, when the time is right, he will make his own decisions, guided by his vision and the needs of the people, not by rumors or external pressure.
